Bond Buzz, Issue #46
July 9 , 2008
Free from Bond America

Welcome to another issue of Bond Buzz!

Welcome summer!  The gardens are in full bloom and the weather is nearly perfect!  And speaking of perfect, there’s also nothing more perfect than a summer throw to use when the evenings bring on a bit of chill (well, at least in Vermont they do).  So we have one for this issue – plus a very unique vest that can be worn multiple ways.  Try it using the stripes as Kathy Perry has done, or just make a solid one.

Tips & Techniques . . .

Drop Stitch Lace
Since I’ve heard from a number of Bond/Sweater Machine owners about how Country works so well on the machine, I thought you’d enjoy getting two patterns using this new yarn, one for the featured project, a Drop Stitch Vest, and the other, a Drop Stitch Summer Throw.  So let’s get right to this issue’s featured technique, Drop Stitch Lace.

Drop Stitch Lace Pattern
While this isn’t really lace, when you drop down stitches that are just 2 or 3 stitches apart, it almost looks like lace.

How this works is two stitches are dropped down and latched up catching 2 "ladders" together to form a big, loose rib.  It is easiest to work an even number of rows and latch up approx every 30-40 rows.  Note that the purl side is the right side.

  • Cast on the required number of stitches called for in the pattern and knit the number of rows specified.
  • Starting from the left end, select the 5th & 6th needles and then every following 9th & 10th needle.

  • Starting from the left, drop down the first 2 sts selected to above the first "bumps" after the CO.

  • Using the latch tool, hold the 2 sts and latch up, catching 2 "ladders" at a time, forming a large rib.

  • Hang sts back on empty needles.

  • Cont across working ea set of 2 sts.  This is what the 2 sts will look like in the center of your work and before you have dropped and latched them up.
